Even though HIV/AIDS is now treatable and preventable, almost 37 million people are still living with HIV worldwide, there are 1 million new infections annually and an estimated 940,000 people still die from HIV/AIDS-related causes every year.
In an effort to keep HIV and global public health in the spotlight, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is urging the G20, which accounts for 85% of the world gross domestic product and 80% of world trade, to keep the most pressing public health matters high on the agenda and set the course for the battle against HIV by ensuring the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is fully funded.
In addition to stamping out HIV, world leaders will have the power at the G20 summit in November to address other vital aspects of health, including drug accessibility, anti-microbial resistance and neglected tropical diseases. By prioritizing people’s lives above profits and defense, G20 leaders can reap substantial benefits, including a robust and more equitable global economy and a healthier world for everyone.
